Just wanted to write a quick post to say that I am having rotator cuff surgery this Thursday, August 12th. I'm going to be completely immobile for a bit, so I'll be taking a short vacation from blogging for the most part. I might be able to post pics, I will just have to play it by ear.
Keep me in your prayers on Thursday, and my poor animals too since they won't be getting all their lovin' like usual!!

Video: Harvey the Cochin Rooster
Fun video of Harvey the Standard Cochin Rooster crowing and then doing his little "love dance" at Scratch the Rhode Island Red hen. Don't know why my camera is so noisy, sorry about that!
Pics from around the Farm
As most of you already know, I fell on our vacation to Cherokee, breaking a bone in my arm and tearing my rotator cuff in two places. Blogging's not going to be easy because of this, because I type really slowly with my left hand! But, I can add pictures rather easily, so that's what I will do for now.

Gobbles enjoying a little shade!

Harvey the rooster and his hens by the well house...waiting on a few water drops when they have a full waterer in their coop!

Harvey the Cochin Rooster

My favorite hen, Scratch the Rhode Island Red.

My little family of Dark Cornish Game Bantams! From left to right, Dad (Butch), baby boy, baby girl, and Mom (Bertha)

Forrest, doing the best he can do. He lives outside by himself now. Sometimes I catch Gobbles peeking in on him. I hope he'll continue to do OK, he still eats, drinks, and gets around ok somehow!

Walking back to see the goats!
Dexter and Yoda

Showing off, standing on their hind legs!

Being nosy!

Dexter trying to get a leaf from my hand.
More leaf eating.

Yoda

I ordered tags with their names and our address and phone number for the escape artists!

More of my sweet boy Yoda.

Enjoying some grass.

Walking around the yard today...
Life on The One Acre Ranch has been interesting this week with our new additions, that's for sure. We are really enjoying them, getting to know them and they're finally getting used to us...but they are a handful! As a matter of fact, Yoda just made the first of (I'm sure) many escape attempts about an hour ago. I was in the living room, farming in Farmville, and I kept hearing a goat baaaaing. I thought it was on the game. Soon I realized it wasn't, but not before lifting the laptop to my ear a few times before I determined the sound was not coming from the speakers! I walked outside to find Yoda standing in our driveway, about 10 feet from the road, and when he saw me he bolted towards the church (which is across a country road that people go 70 mph down!) I ran out the door, BAREFOOT, ran about 50 yards to the road, and Yoda takes off across the road. Wes finally comes to help after getting his shoes on. Well, long story short, we end up chasing Yoda ALL around the church's grounds for about 15 minutes including under the pastor's truck, all around the parsonage, over a big pile of bricks, and out towards the cemetery (thank goodness it wasn't Sunday or Wednesday!) until finally he decides to take off galloping back across the busy street and back down our driveway, where Wes somehow managed to corral him in the chicken coop and grab him. After that I had to have a minor heart attack! Not to mention since I was barefoot running on hot asphalt and then gravel around the church, my poor feet are in bad shape! Turns out, Mr. Yoda broke the D-Ring on his collar. We gotta get a fence!
What formally was a D-Ring on Yoda's collar....we can't even bend it back!
Well, that's all for today. As I said in an earlier post, we lost Wattlelupe today. Wes buried her out behind the chicken coop, I said a few words. I've been so sad all day, but I need to devote that energy to helping Forrest get along. He honestly seems to be grieving for his sister, poor boy. I hope he makes it. On a lighter note, I have plenty of new pics to post, just a few snaps from being out and about earlier.
We finally let Mack meet the babies. Mack was way overly excited, the goats were seriously afraid of him for the most part. But Dexter got brave and decided he wanted to headbutt Mack a few times...Mack was not amused. In this pic he was laying on his back, licking Yoda in the mouth. I have a feeling the goats are going to be the bosses in this situation.
Dexter enjoying a raisin.
Houdini.
Dexter relaxing.
More Yoda. He has such an awesome hairdo.
Uh huh...you thought it was all goats right? Gobbles (and Spotty Dotty) managed to find a sliver of shade under the maple tree in the back yard, they've all been so miserable in this heat so we've been letting them free-range during the day, so they can get in the woods and cool off.
My entourage. They follow me wherever I go :)
Harvey, the standard cochin rooster (reigning prince of the one acre ranch, Gobbles is the king of course), finally mans up and checks out the goats. I just think it's hilarious that the rooster is bigger than the goats!
One more pic of Harvey being brave. He really has turned into a beautiful roo, I think anyway, although Wes says he looks like he has mud on him. He's fluffy to the max, has awesome feathered feet...not to mention he has a soft crow I can't hear over our bedroom fan in the morning! He's very friendly, too. So far he's the perfect rooster, but things change sometimes!
Well, that's all for today, I'm flat out of pictures to share. Be sure to scroll down and view my link to a video of the goats! This weekend we will be modifying an existing chicken house into a goat house, so there will be pictures of that. Also, stay tuned...Butch and Bertha (my dark cornish games...the ones that hatched my first ever babies this spring) will finally be reunited...I know Butch misses his woman!
RIP Wattlelupe

April 22, 2010 - June 25th, 2010
It's with great sadness I announce the passing of my sweet Wattlelupe. I don't know what happened or why, but she passed away last night while we were sleeping. As you can imagine, I'm pretty upset about this so that's all for now. I have a feeling poor Forrest won't be far behind her now :(
Rest in Peace, Sweet Pea
